Tutorial: Hair Highlights

Hairstyle defines personality.
There are different ways to color and draw hair … and it all
depends on the artist.
The hair textures and head contours can also contribute
on how an image be colored.
I agree that eyes hold the character of a person …
then followed by hair – a feature that is somewhat an epitome of our individuality.

There are different styles and ways how
to highlight hair.

CUES TO REMEMBER
Wichtige Hinweise

Brush Position
* to achieve pointed streaks, brush has to be straight
* do the "flicking" motion
Pinselhaltung

  Strokes
* one-sided: do the flicking motion
* double sided: start in the middle and do the flicking motion
* Copic black / coloured Multiliners are very useful
* Multiliners can add more depths
Striche

Flow
* always follow the flow or shape of the hair
* gravity on the strokes also influence the mood of the character
(look closely on the samples below)
"Fall"

Light Source
* if you are not sure on the "white" area, use light coloured pencil as guide
Lichtquelle

Simple styles of highlights:
Einfache Varianten von Lichtreflexen:

* I applied double-sided strokes with Marker C10, blended it Markers C00 and C03
* I also used Black Multiliner 0.2 SP
*Ich habe C10 mit doppelseitigen Strichen wie oben beschrieben aufgetragen und
mit C00 und C03 die Übergänge weicher gezeichnet
* Außerdem habe ich Multiliner 0.2 SP in schwarz verwendet.

* I applied one-sided strokes with Markers C10,C00 and C03
* I used Black Multiliner 0.1 SP
*Ich habe einseitige Striche mit den Markern C10, C00 und C03 aufgetragen.
* Ich habe auch schwarzen Multiliner 0.1 SP verwendet.

* the white area is often times illustrated as straight line
* Der weiße Bereich wird oft als gerade Linie dargestellt.

Important!
A good Highlight should follow the FLOW of the hair.
Sketch in the white areas where the highlights will be, if not sure.
Copic Opaque White can also be used for highlights.

then ...

just have fun!
Wichtig!
Dann....
habt einfach Spaß!

Thank you so much - my colouring technique with my Copic Markers is improving with your fabulous tutorials.
I'm finally happy with my skin blending and colouring. After seeing this tutorial and 'trying' it out I'm really hopeful that my hair colouring will improve too - it's the texture that I find hard to do lol Karen x
